Probably observed on March 1 in the old Roman calendar, New Year’s Day was fixed on January 1 by the period of the Late Republic. Some have suggested this occurred in 153 BC, when it was stipulated that the two annual consuls (after whose names the years were identified) entered into office on that day, though no consensus exists on the matter.Dates in March, coinciding with the spring equinox, or commemorating the Annunciation of Jesus, along with a variety of Christian feast dates were used throughout the Middle Ages, though calendars often continued to display the months in columns running from January to December

Among the 7th-century pagans of Flanders and the Netherlands, it was the custom to exchange gifts at the New Year, a pagan custom deplored by Saint Eligius (died 659 or 660), who warned the Flemings and Dutchmen, “[Do not] make vetulas, [little figures of the Old Woman], little deer or iotticos or set tables (for the house-elf, compare Puck) at night or exchange New Year gifts or supply superfluous drinks (anotherYule custom).” The quote is from the vita of Eligius written by his companion, Ouen.

Most countries in Western Europe officially adopted January 1 as New Year’s Day somewhat before they adopted the Gregorian Calendar. The Feast of the Annunciation, March 25 (9 months before December 25), was the first day of the new year in England until the adoption of the Gregorian Calendar in 1752. The March 25 date was called Annunciation Style; the January 1 date was called Circumcision Style, because this was the date of the Feast of the Circumcision, being the eighth day counting from December 25.

Acording to some traditional Christian beliefs January 1st, New Years Day is the eight day of Christmas of the twelve days of Christmas. Christmas and New Year’s Day are linked theologically because the western calendar used in most of the world (A.D. or C.E.) is based on the birth of Christ and the day of the celebration of Christ’s birth Christmas Day is on December 25 or just seven days before New Year’s Day. It is also only about ten days after the Winter Solstice or shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere and the Summer Solstice or longest day in the year in the southern hemisphere, thus solar cycles are also linked to New Year’s.

Jacob´s Report from Playa Azul Tulum

WIND, WIND, WIND!!!! An absolutely world class day today at Kitebeach Tulum on the Mayan Riviera, Mexico. With Playa Azul Hotel full to the brim and their gorgeous new cabanas at CoCo full, this was destined to be a great day! The wind turned to North-East early in the morning and set up a record day for Quintana Roo's top kite destination on the East coast of Mexico. At one point in the day I counted close to 30 kites in the air from one end of the gorgeous white sandy beach to the other. Of course MORPH kiteboarding was up for the challenge as people flooded the beach for long walks on the beach, great drinks at the Playa Azul's beach front bar, lounging on the beach chairs and of course...kiteboarding lessons!! Both MORPH kite schools, located at Playa Azul and Ana y Jose, were booked solid all day long. One more reason to get online and book you courses early!
The atmosphere at one of worlds best beaches was surreal; full of energy, enthusiasm and smiles. Tomorrow should be just as good as today, if not better, and with all of the people visiting Cancun, Playa Del Carmen, and Tulum this is bound to be one of the best build-ups to New Years 2010 in Mexico! The success of Playa Azul's New Years bash last year is evident and the staff want to match that and some as they have planned an evening of food, music and some of Mexico's greatest entertainers! Don't miss out at one of the top beach parties Tulum has to offer.
Big thanks goes out to all the people involved in a great day at the beach! Keep the stoke alive and be sure to come back and visit regularly.

The only reason why I grabbed this butterfly, is because I´m used to handle butterflies, I used to raise them...

I treat them carefully, just to release them afterwards,

please, do not "grab" or touch this amazing butterflies, they are just amazing to see,

and this is the season, if you open your eyes, you will see them, everywhere, on the street , highway, the hotel,etc!

It´s hard to believe that the hotel Playa Azul is one year old! With support from the Tulum community, and lots of hard work and faith, we´re very happy with the hotel as it is now – vibrant, beautiful, and always with new improvement projects underway. Our Playa Azul team of workers is better than ever – most of our employees have stuck with us from the outset, when nothing was certain and we usually needed a lot of luck to make it to the next week!

We´re also proud to say that we are opening Coco Tulum Hotel and cabanas, a different kind of place than Playa Azul, to cater to other visitors to Tulum. Our Coco Tulum Hotel guests will enjoy a chic little quiet spot on the beach, with minimalist cabanas that have special touches. Our guests can also enjoy the Playa Azul beachclub, restaurant, and the art that Playa Azul has come to be known for. Some of our guests even request certain rooms just because of the artwork in a particular cabana! The design of the rooms does add some flavor to our particular Tulum beach hotels.

The Playa Azul Sport Center has also taken off, with our Morph Kiteboarding partners. All of our Tulum guests can enjoy the show of kites floating in the sky and kiteboarders flying through the air. The kiteboarding school has also helped quite a few newbies onto the water to try it out for themselves!

Our Sunday parties are starting again, and this Sunday we´re kicking it off at the Playa Azul Beachclub with one of Tulum´s favorite bands, Bandikoro. Our friends are excited about getting back to our daytime beach parties, with the sun and the water, enjoying a delicious margarita or mojito, and dancing to the beat.

Aboe all, we´re pleased that we are sticking to our purpose here with Playa Azul Tulum hotel and Coco Tulum hotel beach hotels and cabanas… making sure that our guests and friends have everything that they need for a fun, relaxing, unforgettable vacation!

I wanted to let you know that Dylan was a great instructor! Very professional, very competent, and patient. Focused on doing his job well even though it must be boring at times for someone who is very good at this (I never got the sense that he was bored). He was always 100% ready to get me out of trouble the instant I started to get into trouble (which was rare due to his thorough explanations). All in all, an excellent experience!

Hello every body

This email is to let you know that God really answers prayers. My stolen kite gear was found on 5th ave at 38th ave. Someone spotted it and it was being sold on the street at the Andale Bazaar !!!

Thanks to all who read and passed on the email to friends and thanks to David Morph Kiteboarding and Marco Extreme Control who who spread the info wide and far and posted it on their blogs . Thats how my kite and board were seen and identified. We really are a community.

Someone named Colin saw it Sunday around 7 am in the morning, and called David, who called me. So I collected some friends for support ( and translation) early and we walked to the Andale bazaar, and got it back.

Thanks Colin for spotting it and having it in your mind. One day we will meet on water

Viernes 11 de Diciembre, dia de Preparación para el torneo Amateur de kiteboarding Xpu Ha

el viernes, fué más bien un día de preparación,
hicimos una ofrenda a los 4 pntos cardinales y a los Dioses de los vientos, para bendecir el evento, ( que sirvió bastante bien!, el sábado fué INcreíble, ya tendremos fotos----

aprovechamos también para celebrar el cumpleaños de Shelly! Felicidades!!,
los DJ´s estuvieron preparando su Música, mientras todos los demás estaban preparando los escenarios, los toldos, las boyas de Red BUll, cuando de pronto llegaron nuestros amigos de Coco Bongo con la máscara, y nos ofrecieron una excelente Batucada!!!
Tambié empezaron a llegar los competidores de Cozumel y Yucatán, y sólamente de verlos entrenar, fué un adelanto de lo que éste evnto sería...
en general, un día tranquilo, pero la pásamos super bien!!!
éstas son las únicas fotos que tengo hchas con mi cámara, pero durante la semana, estaré publicando las fotos de los fotógrafos oficiales dl evento,

Jacob´s Report from Playa Azul Tulum

Hello from the Mayan Riviera! Another great day at Playa Azul with Morph Kiteboarding!! We got to the beach to find cranking winds and rolling waves! The ultimate set up for Kiteboarding in Tulum! If you like kite surfing the waves, throwing big air, or just learning to kiteboard with MorphKiteboarding Schools, this was one of the best days of the season! Lots of people were out watching us soar over the Caribbean sea, with some people starting the day with the new breakfast menu of Playa Azul...DELICIOUS!!
After a long session on the water we headed north towards Playa Del Carmen and took in some of the best amateur kiteboarding in Mexico! The tournament was held at Xpuha Bonanza, which is also the home to one of Morph kiteboarding's four schools on the Mayan Riviera. What a phenomenal event with sponsors like RedBull, Corona, Xpuha Bonanza, Playa Azul, EH/Morph Kites and many more, this first annual tournament is guaranteed to bring people from around the world to experience some of Mexico's premier kiteboarding locations! With some of the elite kiteboarders coming from Tulum, Cozumel and Playa Del Carmen, there were many other cities and towns represented!
While scuba diving, centotes, and fishing have been the popular sports of the tourists visiting the Mayan Riviera, I think kiteboarding will be working its way into that mix very soon as the East coast of Mexico's kiteboarding culture grows!! If you missed it today, be sure to check out the finals of the kiteboarding freestyle Sunday, along with great DJ'd music, drinks care of Corona and RedBull and of course the delicious Mexican cuisine!

from Cabarete, 2 hours north, driving, from then, we took a boat for like 30 minutes, were they brought us into this SAND KEY of around 70 sqm, and 30 knots blowing just for us!
